NTNP 9/2014 Newsletter
Notes for NTNP Metro West,
The weather has turned cool, the kids are back in school, and Christmas decorations are up at WalMart. For some it is a new year, for many it is the end of the third quarter. You still have a few months to get those 'bucket items' of the year checked off.
For many of NTNP Metro West members it has been a busy year. TNP hosted an Affiliate Leadership conference for affiliate (we are one) board members in January. We brought back some great ideas.
We sent Chis Keil and Ginger Miloud to TNP's Legislative Academy. This is a (1) year leadership commitment that includes 10 CEUs. They have learned about the legislative issues facing NPs in Texas and how to make visits and start conversations with our state representatives. If you have questions about visiting your legislator, please find either one of these NTNP MW representatives at our next meeting.
In April, many NTNP MW members spent the weekend down at the San Antonio Hill Country Hyatt for the TNP Spring Pharmacology Conference. We solved many of the world's problems at our Happy Hour then continued under the stars in their lazy river.
NTNP MW developed committees to better serve you, our members. I am over the legislative committee. Lashonda Burns is the sitting chair of programs and social media committee. Diana Jones has a very active membership committee. And Tami Ray will have some announcements from the scholarship committee at our next meeting. If these committees sound interesting to you, you can still join.
Lashonda has done a terrific job lining up programs for us. This week we have our meeting on Thursday at Eddie V's: Type 2 Diabetes in Adults and Improving Glycemic control. As of last week it was on a waiting list, if you have not signed up. If you have signed up and cannot attend, PLEASE, please cancel, so spots will open up. Please check the site, spaces may open up. Don't forget your Dollars for Diapers. The Edna Gladney dinner is in November. It will be here before you know it!
Last weekend, there were 18 NTNP MW members that attended the TNP 26th Conference in downtown San Antonio. They had over 750 attendees. You could have received 21.5 CEUs. Plus met the requirements for Schedule 2 drugs, Ethics, Jurisprudence and geriatrics new CEU requirements. TNP introduced the TNP PAC. The purpose of the TNP PAC is to help elect and keep in office state public officials and candidates, without regard to party affiliation, who support legislative priorities that promote improving patient access to quality health care and nurse practitioners as healthcare providers. The TNP PAC is only for TNP members. If you are interested in donating but currently not a TNP member or you don't want to give to political candidates, you can still donate to the TNP Advocacy Program. This program takes volunteer time and money that goes to improve our chances in the 83rd Texas Legislature. Examples of this is the TNP Legislative Days.
The 2015 Nurse Practitioner 'Round the Capitol' Legislative Days provide you with a chance to shape the regulations impacting your profession and the care delivered to your patients. Together, we can make a difference. The Capitol Legislative Day for the (DFW) region is April 8, 2015. This event is paid for by TNP, so free to all that can attend. NTNP Metro West encourages all nurse practitioners, nurse practitioner students, and other APRNs to get involved in the legislative process by attending this scheduled Nurse Practitioner Days at the Capitol. Family, friends and even patients can also go on this road trip. The day will begin with an informational session at the capitol followed by pre-scheduled meetings with your state legislators. If registered early, children under the age of 13 can be their Legislator's 'page' of the day. They get to meet their representative, follow the staff on and off the House/Senate floor, special accommodations and a certificate. Online registration is available until: 3/27/2015.
NTNP Metro West is looking increase our membership. We have a record 174 active members. But we are wanting to surpass the 250 mark by years end. We have a total of 650 followers to our association. If you have let your membership expire or know someone that is not a member, now is the time to join. Diana and her committee will discuss incentives to bringing in new members. I think you will like this!!!
Congratulations to Paula Vastine. Last month she retired from TCC School of Nursing after 45 years!! Thank you Paula for your service and dedication to nursing.
If you have any Kudos for yourself or a fellow NP, Please let us know so we can celebrate with you!
So don't forget this Thursday at Eddie V's: your RSVP, $ for Diapers.
