December 2012 Newsletter

Posted about 6 years ago by Shelagh Larson

Dear Metro West members,

HOHOHO! How time does fly! It is hard to believe that I have had this position almost a year now. I am so lucky to be associated with such fine professionals and friends. We have completed most of the goals that I set out to achieve in January. I wanted to move to an updated website, see joint meetings with our Dallas chapter and the local PA group, increase membership, and have a membership renewal process with the TNP. We have been very visible in the reelection of two of our big supporters in the Texas legislature. Plus as a bonus one of our own was recognized this year at the TNP conference as 2012 TNP Presidents Award winner: Dr. Jan Zdanuk.

I hope everyone by now is comfortable navigating on our new site. Your board has listened to your ideas and hopefully made this form of communication very easy. We are still trying to tweak the RSVP process but hopefully it is easier for you. Please check to make sure it is not going to your SPAM box.

We had a great turnout for the FW-Dallas joint chapter dinner meeting. It was fantastic to network with the group. Unfortunately, last month there was some confusion about our meeting with the PA group. But they have offered to include the NTNP Metro West to their next meeting Dec. 11 at The Capital Grille. Heidi Medcalf, the FWPA president, is excited about a proposal to have a 2013 Christmas Dinner with NTNP of Fort Worth and Dallas Chapters. Perhaps the beautifully decorated Gaylord will be the venue. The drug reps have had to really cut back on their dinner/speaker programs so the idea of occasional combination meetings will allow us to continue these free dinner meetings, the way we have been accustomed. This also gives us the opportunity to network.

Although we have lost some members, we have an overall increase in our membership. Emily Easton of TNP and your membership chair Diana Jones are making it possible to renew your NTNP and TNP memberships in one place. NTNP Metro West is the pilot group for this program. It will be possible to go to either site and renew your memberships to BOTH groups at one time. If TNP get NPs that join in our area that are not NTNP members, they can offer membership to us and vice versa. No more trying to remember which group you need to renew. Please encourage your friends and coworkers to join our group. And to those that have dropped out of site, let’s get them back in. We miss them!

The 2012 election season has finally come to an end and newly elected members are gearing up for the both the 113th session of the United States Congress and the 83rd session of the Texas Legislature.  The next session of Congress runs from January 3, 2013 to January 3, 2015.  The 140-day regular session of the Texas Legislature convenes January 8 and adjourns May 27, 2013. NTNP Metro West was very visible this year in the elections. We had many members that walked blocks, made phone calls, attended rallies and gave contributions to our supporters. With Wendy Davis returning and Kelly Hancock newly elected to Austin as our area Senators, we have support in the Senate. Many of the newly elected Representatives have pledged their support. Make plans now to join us on February 11 for the CNAP Advocacy Seminar and Legislative Day at the Sheraton Downtown Austin, including hands-on visits with state decision-makers at their Capitol offices.  TNP, our lobbyist and CNAP has worked diligently this year with all nursing stakeholders in developing a new advocacy approach, the collaborative prescriptive authority model.

Our next NTNP Metro West meeting will be December 13 at the Edna Gladney Building. We will be collecting donations and items for our adopted charity this year: The Veterans. This goes in line with the AANP philanthropy: Joining Forces. If you have any questions, please email our coordinator Deborah Brown. Peggy Orr has decided that after 5 years of planning our monthly programs it is time to pass that job on to someone else. She has started a new job and she is not in contact with many pharmacology reps. Thank you, Peggy for all of your tireless time and planning. The NTNP Metro West is ever indebted to you. We will be taking nominations for Programs Chair; self-nominations are welcomed.
